Pack by what you need to do
A useful packing list follows the evening: arrive, put up shelter, eat, wash, stay warm and sleep.
Shelter and sleep
Bring the tent, poles, stakes and rainfly as one checked set. Add a sleeping pad and a sleeping bag suited to the forecast. A repair sleeve and a little repair tape take up little room.
Light and layers
Pack a headlamp where you can reach it and check its batteries. Keep an insulating layer and rain protection accessible. Dry socks are worth a dedicated bag.
Water and cooking
Confirm whether drinking water is available. Bring enough water or an appropriate treatment method. Use cooking equipment only outdoors and follow current fire and stove restrictions. Never cook inside a tent.
A simple last check
Carry necessary medication, a basic first-aid kit, navigation you can use offline and a charged phone. Adjust the list to the site and the people going; a checklist is a starting point, not a substitute for local advice.
