A calmer first night outdoors

Keep the first trip simple: one night, a familiar forecast, and a campsite with clear arrival instructions.

Before you leave

Practise pitching the tent at home. Count the stakes, check the poles and try the rainfly. Pack the pieces together so you are not solving a missing-part puzzle at dusk.

Choose an easy arrival

Aim to arrive with daylight to spare. Read the campsite rules and locate water, toilets and the site boundary before unpacking. Use an established tent pad and avoid low ground where water can collect.

Set up for sleep

Put a sleeping pad between you and the ground. Keep dry sleep clothes separate from the day’s layers. Store food and scented items according to the campground’s wildlife guidance, never in the sleeping tent.

Leave room to change plans

Check current local conditions before departure. A first trip does not need to happen in a storm. Keep a clear way home and tell someone where you plan to stay.
